Lots of old people love to hand over their treasured stuff to their younger bloodlines and many a times musical instruments are also acquired this way.

This helps develop interest and its cheaper too.

Have you ever inherited a musical instrument this way?

In my region, people have largely abandoned traditional musical instruments in favour of appraising successful musicians and they mostly come into contact with musical instruments in church or during festivals. Those who inherit them are the ones who follow their family's career path.

I inherited my uncle's old black and white electric guitar. I don't play it because I don't know how but I still have it stored away safely in case one day it becomes my passion. I don't have the amplifiers or any of that equipment yet but having the guitar is a huge help and a big step towards beginning to learn. I feel pretty special having it.

Church or temples are good places to learn instruments. You are right. Multiple instruments can encourage youths to atleast learn one or two without the worry of getting theur own instruments in the initial phase.

I've never inherited any type of musical instrument. I probably wouldn't mind it though. Sometimes they can be worth a lot to the person that inherits that instrument. Even if that person doesn't go on to play that instrument, then it usually has some sort of sentimental value for that person so they'll never get rid of it.

I haven't inherited any musical instrument, and I am sad because of it, as I love music. There were no musical or sports traditions in my family, which is sad, as those are the best things in life for me. I am guessing if my parents played any instrument, they would have made me study or learn some instrument, I would have loved that!

My grandfather was well known guitar player in my local area. I always visited him during the holidays and he gave me some lessons. When he died, he left me his guitar which he always said that it's older than my his first born son. However, it seems like I not only inherited his guitar, but also his talent.

No modesty right there @ptahm22, so you are a talented guitar player? Do you play in a band or just occasionally?

To be honest, that is something I do envy, I wish someone would have taught me, but at the same time it's never too late. For me the main issue is that I simply have too many things I really need to do right now, and I cannot dedicate the time music would deserve.

With a drum kit, and especially one that a newbie is playing, you'll often find that some parts have been handed down or donated, and for a beginner it's not uncommon for them to be playing on a kit that they haven't spent any of their own money on. There are that many parts to a full kit that a lot of drummers and especially those just starting out will replace as and when they can afford to, so if you can't afford to buy a full kit right from scratch the you are obviously going to be grateful for whatever you can get in the beginning.

Sadly none....My ancestors were never fond of playing music so all I had in my house was an old harmonium and tabla which is now no longer worth any use. I had sold it a year back and that too for a minimal price

Yeah, and living in a flat is also not the best motivation to play, as it makes a lot of noise and the neighbours complain. I suppose that if I live in the country or a house I could simple go to the garage or the basement and do my scene there with the inherited instruments. Nothing like dreaming a little. :)

Yes I did, and I still have it and only once in while get it out. My father was a very good saxophone player and I have his college one that he adored. I cannot play, but I like to look at it, and it a very nice one.

Not yet inherited but I have been promised. My brother is planning on upgrading his guitar and he promised to give me the older one. It means a whole world to him and him giving it to me would mean a lot. Inheriting musical instruments is something that happens so often.

We are not a family from musicians.so i don't have such experiences. But things like jewelleries and some silver God statues are inherited from my ancestors and it keep on follwed by my descendants too.

I never did, but I guess I just didn't have anyone close to me to really be passionate and want to pass it on.
A few years ago a friend has been trying to give me his guitar but he still uses it so I always felt like I was borrowing it and slowly let him take it back, haha.

At this point, I think I'll just save up for an instrument on my own.
