As far as web design is concerned, there are lots of styles you can choose from. Material design seems to be strongest trend lately, considering how popular Android devices have got (and, as a consequence, Google), but there are other emerging designs, like Microsoft's Metro.
Do you follow any style guidelines when designing your website, or do you prefer to come up with your own original style? If so, how would you describe it? Sleek? Detailed? Minimalistic? Share your experience!

I strongly favor minimalism. My ideal approach is to have as little as possible while offering as much as possible. There are some really cool things you can do with web design, but those aren't in my sights anytime soon. My main concern is just making sure that I have an effective layout that leads to conversions.

I prefer to make a simple and clear site without too many distractions. I tend to look at what the latest trend are and try to incorporate some of the ideas into my design. At this point in time the parallax sites are in fashion, so I have incorporated that into my sites, but I try to clean it up so it isn't distracting my audience from the content.

I fully agree with what you said about distractions! If a site is built in a way that can take eyes off of important calls to action or buttons, you will lose out on profit in the long run and it's -so- easy to fix! People just need to realize that less really is more
