Do you notify members when you delete their posts?

Carrying out forum administrator's or moderator's duties involves removing from public viewing and deleting some members posts that are not relevant to the forum because they don't add any value in terms of content.

When you deem it necessary to delete a post, do you like notifying the member of the action and why their post(s) was removed/deleted?

I think that it is very important to notify members when their posts get deleted. Moreover, the admins should also send a note that states the reason for why the post was deleted so that the member could possibly avoid making the same mistake again and again.

I think when it initially happens, yes, notify them why the post/topic was removed. Now if it's a repeat thing and the user has been warned multiple times, notifying them is not needed, but giving them a warning to stop is recommended.

If they don't stop, than a possible suspension or ban could be issued.

In a situation where they keep making such posts all over the forum, I think that it's too much work for the moderator or administrator to keep telling them the reason why their posts are deleted. They should be even given account restriction to serve as a warning.

It is very important to notify the user when his or her post is deleted. This will not only help the user know what happened with the post but even help him understand what shouldn't be done in the future so that posts are not deleted. I always notify users when I delete posts.

Yeah, it's the right thing to do when it comes to informing users why their post was deleted so they will stop making the same mistake all over again. Personally, I'm the kind of person that doesn't like being told something twice. Once I make a mistake and I'm corrected, it's never happening again.

Notifying genuine users will discourage then from further repeating the same mistake, however, for some users who are on the forum just for spamming or milking the resources, notifying when a post is deleted never works. They continue to repeat the mistake and the admin and moderator have to be strict and even ban the account.

Dealing with these kind of members can seriously get on my nerves. Imagine when you would have to tell a single user the same thing more than 5 times in a day. What the hell is wrong with some of them anyways? They deserve to be suspended for a period of time.

If you go through the work of deleting their posts, there's no point in including the reason why they are having their posts deleted. There are members who would argue about why you shouldn't have deleted their posts but when you have your proof why they deserve to be binned, they will have to accept it and move on.

I would simply start having all of their posts moderated. This way I won't have to worry about having them litter the whole forum with posts that shouldn't have been posted for others to see and report. When they see their posts are being moderated, they will think twice before making posts.

If I feel I need to delete a post from a member on a forum due to it not being relevant or even being low-quality and pointless I do tend to let them know that their post was deleted and why it was deleted.

I feel it is important to ensure you alert members to the fact you deleted their post as it could lead to issues if you delete it without letting them know, especially if you have to do it a lot and it can seem like you are targeting them if you have no proof you deleted it for a reason and alerted them.

No matter what you are doing with their thread, they have the right to be informed of what's going on with it since they are the actual owners of their thread. May it be deleting it, editing it, moving it or something else, they must be informed.

Some forums have rules against editing users posts. If after reviewing their posts and it's something that's meant to be edited, the line of action is to PM the user about the post and ask them to edit it. If they give you the permission to edit, then you can go ahead and do it.

If it was a post that was clearly against the rules or a duplicate post, I probably wouldn't notify them. If it were a post where they gave a wrongful answer in a support area or something, I'd probably notify them and let them know the answer was not correct so I had to step in to essentially correct it.

I would say that it's even going to serve you better to have such a post that's clearly against the rules or a duplicate post deleted and inform the user who made the post. In that kind of case, they wouldn't have anything to complain about because they know they breached the rules.

True, at least posts that break the rules. Making duplicate posts can just be combined into one, so hopefully, they'll come to the conclusion that double posting isn't allowed when seeing their posts combined, but if it continues I suppose it is in your best interest to notify them. Most posts that break the rules should be common sense that it isn't allowed, such as flaming, illegal stuff, or obscene stuff, for instance. I guess that's why I came to the conclusion that they don't necessarily need to be notified because most of the rules broken are common sense not to do in the first place, but I suppose a reminder never hurts.

The reason why I actually make out time to remind them when such posts have been deleted is that most of the users don't really make out time to read the forum rules and that is the reason why they don't even know such rules apply to whatever content they are posting on the platform. Majority of them don't even apply common-sense when they are making use of a messaging board.

You're definitely not wrong, people rarely take the time to read the rules/TOS. It's sad when they cannot even use common sense when posting on a public forum, though. You have to "baby" some members.

Exactly! I just told myself it's being lenient with how I manage some forums members would be the only way of having them stick around for a longer time. This is because if I cave in on them based on how some of misuse messaging board, over 80% of them will either be getting banned or account suspension frequently.

It is be very important to always notify people when there posts are pulled down and also the reason for doing so. It saves them from committing the same error next time..
