Do you feel Google is an SEO monopoly?

I feel like it is and isn't at the same time. Obviously, Google is the biggest search engine in the world. They got there through people using them and relying on them the most. Nothing wrong with that. The issue is that they buy up companies and benefit them and close the market in more ways than one. Look at YouTube for a good example.
 
Well, how can a company be competitive when there's not competition? Basically, you have a tyranny. You see the same thing with governments. You just can't trust human nature.

However, the upside of monopolies and big companies is they have stronger and better control over products as with Wal-Mart and McDonald's.
 
In a way yes, but then again you have the Chinese search engines and probably Russia will come out with some that are challenging google. Besides there is bing and yahoo, that kinda give Google a run for it's money.
 
Other search engines exist, but Google is the most popular. They aren't a monopoly in the sense that they don't buy out competitors and shut them down, resulting in a lack of competition.
 
Google is the most popular search engine in the world. The are other search engines out there, but nothing comes close to Google's effectiveness. But having SEO done on Google would create maximum impact on your site, compared to doing SEO on Bing and other search engines.
 
Google does not control SEO, the SEO strategies you use to rank on Google will also work for Bing as well as Yahoo and a lot pf other search engines. Google has a monopoly on search engine market with almost 70 market share. Google update will make you lose your rank on Google, but it will have no effect on Bing and Yahoo. So, how could anyone say Google controls SEO
