I see many musicians closing their eyes when singing or playing an instrument. I know drummers do it too. Just wondering if you do it and how often. I must admit that I never close my eyes live, just in practice occasionally. I get nervous that I'll miss my target or not see some crazed person about to leap at me! Haha!

I'm a part of the music ministry in our church and we often close our eyes while playing an instrument. I normally do it so I can focus more and I can concentrate in our music while playing, and most of the time I'm getting carried away that's why I get to close my eyes. Many popular performers do it as well and closing your eyes while you sing absolutely does not mean that you are being snobbish of some kind, that's just ridiculous in my opinion.

Yes i will close my eyes while playing. It happens automatically when i start to play.

I haven't stopped to think much about it, but I probably do it quite a bit.

At least while singing certain songs I know I do it because someone already made fun of me for it, so now it is kind of a joke I have to overdo the emotional part when I sing certain songs.

It is an instinct that when you want to focus on some senses you try to not overuse others. You reduce distractions. By closing my eyes I might be letting myself to focus better in the sound. I don't mean any disrespect.

I agree that a little eye contact with the audience performing is nice, but ultimately I rather the artist do whatever they feel more comfortable with to give us their best.
