What the title says. Do you make a budget for all of the forum expenses? Maybe through an Excel sheet and what not?

I don't bother using it to be honest neither do I really have a budget as the only things I spend money on is the domain.

Can't say that I've ever set up a Budget for a project. Typically, I don't make websites or forums for the purpose of making money. I make them for the purpose of helping, guiding, or providing something fun to do for users. I don't purchase anything unless I think a project will be successful and is worth having things purchased for it.

I'm in the same boat as Teg. I normally make a site for the sole purpose of providing something for people that is either fun for them or beneficial in some way. I don't make a site with the expectations of it making money for me. If members did want to donate, then I would probably turn back around and put it right back into the site. Like, I might hold a contest and use that money that the members donate for prizes for the contest.

I think you should have some basic idea of what you're willing to spend. If you don't, you'll either spend a lot, or nothing. It's an interesting boat, actually. You should have some idea of what you want to spend on advertising, hosting, contests, domains, etc. if you don't; you'll be floating around having no real goals or expectations with your project.

I never really felt the need to make any kind of budget sheet to be honest. Right now I am run on forum on my own that I pay for yearly and I know when the payments need to be made and how much so I really just ensure I have the money when I know it needs to be paid and I don't have to worry after that.

I run all of my stuff to be billed in the same week (server costs and what not) so I do budget myself to an extent just to be sure everything gets paid on time.
