Sales are income whereas marketing is expenses. When you sell, you generate revenue for your business. When you market, you spend money on promotional activities such as running ads online, print, radio, or on TV. However, sales and marketing are deeply interconnected. sales can happen only when you do marketing. No marketing means no sales.
 
My understanding of Marketing is that it is synonymous to advertising. But in the formal definition, advertising is under the category of marketing which is the promotion of a business or anything - can be a brand, a person or even an organization. Sales is the actual selling which process starts with the order and ends with the delivery. In small companies there is no difference in marketing and sales that a salesman acts as the marketing person and vice versa.
