I have always wanted to create my own website that is an ecommerce site and i have done research into the cost of the items and the profit margins that i can generate and it seems to be a very good business model in that sense. The one thing that i have not accounted for yet however is the actual cost of setting up the website and making it as interactive as possible so that people have the best experience buying from it and for it to incorporate as much as possible into the actual payment structure and methods that it supports. What is the average cost to set up a small time ecommerce site?

You can build a blogging site or forum site, almost free or at a low cost. But building an e-commerce site is challenging. You should have a good security structure to prevent hackers and data leaks. It would be good if you approach a professional, to do this. It might be a little expensive though.

Security is the most important thing on these type of sites, especially if you have payment options that allow people to use their credit or debit card, because they have to be assured that the information that they are sharing with you will remain secure so that they are not put at risk as well. That is one of the main reasons why I tend to not transact with my card online because of the security on some of these ecommerce sites.

For your online business of an e-commerce store, the average cost will be $5,000 to $10,000. For domain name, $2 -$20 per year. For Hosting, $300 per month.

That is a pretty good breakdown that you have provided here, however what does the cost of 5k to 10k usd likely to cover. Will this include all of your cyber security costs that you would need in order to set up the respective firewalls and be able to ensure that the website is free from hackers? The domain is actually a lot cheaper than i would have expected to be entirely honest.

This price range is expected if you are hiring a highly professional person to set up your e-commerce store as well as for the maintenance of it.

Maintenance on the site is very important and if the estimation and cost range that you have given here is able to provide that as well then i definitely think that in that way it can be worth it, because with a good website i am sure that you can make that this investment in a couple of months, especially if there is a large market base for the product that you are interested in.

$300 per month for hosting? Get real, lol. At best a dedicated server would only be around $100 a month or less. Where are you getting the info? I can only see paying $300 a month in hosting for some big reseller hosting enterprise.

Does the cost of the server that you are using to host change depending on the traffic that is generated to your website, if I may ask? Personally I would expect that it would depend on this because if you have more people then you have to have a server that is able to handle more people as well. Am I correct in my line of thinking?

If you are using premium platforms such as shopify, big commerce, wix etc., you need a lot of money to design an ecommerce site. You will have to pay for subscriptions as well as themes and add ons. if you use open source platforms, your cost can be easily minimized as you do not have to pay for subscription, but you still need to pay for domain, hosting and website templates.
