I think its quite risky. The problem is, we don't know what they will be hiding behind these awesome themes.

iframes, backdoors, and lot more risky stuffs. So I prefer not to download and install free wordpress themes outside from wordpress. For example there is a plugin called wp-touch. Once wordpress notified all of its users about a backdoor and so they were reverting back that plugin to the last version.
In this case wordpress notified us. But what if we download stuffs like these from outside of wordpress and never come to know about these.

What do you think?

I think that there are reputable sites out there creating themes, the trick is to only use larger, respected free theming sites... :) I'm not really afraid of using themes off other sites for Wordpress purely because the issue of hijacking a site through a theme isn't too common...

Never used wordpress before, but I would stick to trusted sites or make my own theme. Not sure how complicated that would be but I'd prefer it to look like something I made to something someone else made. :)

You really do have to be careful with anything that you install from places that don't have good verification methods / review processes in place.
Even from official sites you are at risk. Some sites may offer you themes/etc that look cool, but the security isn't fully evaluated.

Regarding Wordpress specifically I have never had any problems. I either made my own themes, or got them from sources that have a good reputation. The reputation they hold is worth more than anything they could get from a backdoor (generally).
