Wikipedia has remained ad-free throughout the life of the resource database.

They are able to do this with the model of user donations. They have a few donation drives to reach a certain goal. This helps them remain ad-free.

Do you feel such a model could work on forums?

Instead of doing ads or other affiliate/sponsorship type income generation, you rely solely on donation drives. This could pay for your domain, server, software, and additional costs each year. You could even factor in some profit as long as you're transparent about it. You are effectively doing a job so you could justify profit in donations.

How do you all feel about a model like that being used on a forum?
