Why do some forum allow only 5kb or less for avatar size?

There was a forum I was trying to register on some months ago and when it got to the point where I needed to upload my avatar, I found out that it was only 5kb max size is allowed to be uploaded. Also, I think that the width of the avatar must be 400x400. If the avatar exceeds that specifications in size, it won't be uploaded.

Why does some forum use this kind of set up? I personally find it very frustrating and difficult to complete my account registration.

It is indeed very frustrating and only that aspect can discourage you from completing your registration on the forum but I believe the issue emanates from their hosting provider.

I came across a forum a few weeks ago that had this same issue, I think they had it set to have the avatar filesize no bigger than 4KB and it had to be 120 x 120 if I remember rightly in size. I was able to change the image I wanted to use to suit the sizes they wanted but it was a pain to do.

I believe that some forum owners set it like this so that it doesn't take up too much in terms of their hosting. I can't imagine something bigger would cause any issues but I do think people do it out of being cautious.

This could be another angle but I am not sure of how true it is because in the website I have, I have not been given any of such terms before as concerning space for my site

phpBB has 5 kb restrictions by default but you can increase the size. Some forum owners keep the file upload size to just 5kb in order to reduce the server loads. If you allow bigger files, soon you will find your forum loading really slowly.

Some forums may limit avatar sizes to 5kb or less in order to reduce the quantity of data that must be downloaded and the amount of storage space needed on their servers. Smaller avatars can also assist with reducing page load times and enhance the forum's overall speed.

I too came across the same issue when I was trying to add the avatar on my profile on a forum site that I am already a member for a reward. However I really struggled with it in vain. I eventually left without success in doing so.

there are so many way you could have reduced the size of the image and one of such ways is by downloading an app like photo puma that can help you reduce the size of an image without killing the quality.
