When did you know you had the talent?

When did you know you had the talent for percussion? Were you always musically inclined or did someone notice out of the blue that you could keep a good beat as you tapped your pencil on the table at work?

I wish I would have taken the offer to play in a community band when they needed percussionists even though I wasn't trained. I was a choir director so I could keep tempo but until someone asked me to join the band I never thought I'd be good enough for percussion.

I started playing kit in around 2002/2003 maybe slightly younger and within a few weeks I was holding down a. Beat getting there with my others bits. Played in a band for 3/4 years through school whilst also drumming in a marching band too. Since then even though I have just returned from a 8 year break I can still pick up a set of sticks and be mediocre in a few hours ...

I have to be honest that I think I don't have the talent for the percussion. Ironically, I enjoy drumming my fingers on the table when there is fast music like rock or heavy metal in the air. When my nephew was not using his drum set anymore, I was thinking of buying it for my own use at home but my wife said that a drum set needs a studio so that the noise would not pervade the serenity of the neighborhood.

I was pretty much told by my art teacher in Middle School that I didn't have what it took to play something like the piano or the drums. He made me do a simple exercise where my right hand had to fall twice in the time my left one fell. He just interrupted me and said that I didn't have it, then he assigned me to learn to play the recorder.

To be honest that was a shocker to me. I never had picked an instrument before, but I always assumed I was competent at keeping a beat. Haha. Oh, well.

In the end, a skill is something we can build with our effort, so I shouldn't have let what that teacher said to prevent me from trying for as long as it did.

I am not sure if mine was talent.

We have this national arts festival where most of the girls turn up. Guitar and keyboard are two things that captured girls during my younger days.

Most of us boys would learn free instrument classes from school so we could make a show infront of the girls. Ha..those days.

I think this is one reason why I only know 'Every night in my dreams' from Titanic.

Growing up my brother and cousins would always have a band concert every family outing as a kid so the music was their. Plus I would always play the drums. I started playing the drums in 7th grade, also took lessons.
Then jumped on to guitar in high school to pick up the girls. Playing was just East for my go pick up just took practice.i still beat around playing the drums. Just need to get another set.

I stumbled unto percussion when really wanting to play the xylophone. The band teacher starts all xylophone people on percussion, but I didn't know that. Anyway, I liked drums and caught on to it. I suppose, but can't remember, that I didn't pursue the xylophone.
