What is a web server and how does it work exactly?

Web servers are software that enable people to access the website. Whenever a person sends a request in order to access the website, the web servers respond to that. So, how do website servers work? How do they help access website?

A web server uses HTTP to communicate with web browsers, which request files from the server. A web server can be either hardware or software, or both. A hardware web server is a computer that stores web server software and website files. A software web server is a program that understands URLs and HTTP and can send the requested files to the browser.

Well, I am not sure how to explain this in simple terms. I guess you can say the server is the first piece on the foundation that is the internet in which you build from.
