What happened to Yahoo?

About 15 years or so when I first started using the internet I registered my first ever email with Yahoo. For several years I've been attempting to regain access to my original email account without any success - I know the password and all of the info, but apparently 2FA is activated on my account to an old phone number, which I'm almost sure I never activated and I never recall having to get a text or anything to get into the email.

Anyway, regardless, Yahoo support is completely and utterly useless - but I wanted to ask everyone - what's happened to Yahoo? They were a big player in the email/search space all those years ago, and it seems like they're almost an irrelevancy now.

There were sold multiple times over the years.

Verizon bought them out and now they’re owned by Apollo management along with AOL.

Yahoo’s main issue was the fact that they purchased too many companies back in the day and burned their company into the ground when Marissa was at the helm. They lost a lot of money buying most of those companies.


Yahoo is on a buying spree to bolster its core products, most of which have miraculously survived nearly three decades of internet tumult.

Why it matters: Yahoo was all but left dead by Verizon when it was soldto Apollo Global Management in 2021. Under its new owners, the company — founded in January 1994 — is getting a rare chance to reinvent itself.
 
The first email address I had was hotmail, then later I started using Yahoo mail. I had a couple of accounts with them. I used their multiple services. However, I was never a fan of Yahoo mail. They sent too many spam mails, most of their mails came from x rated sites. Therefore, when I found GMail, I started using GMail and eventually forgot Yahoo. Many years later when I tried to access my yahoo mail, I couldn't
