I'd love to get some subscribing (supporter) members for my forum but not really sure what to offer them in exchange for their money. I'm considering private chat subforums as well as premium content (available free to subscribers) such as downloads and articles/tutorials not available to regular members. I've seen where some forums charge anywhere from $5.00 to $20 a month for premium membership. Just want to make sure i'm offering enough for the money being charged.

What are your thoughts on offering subscriptions to finance your forum? Does this earn money? If so, what do you offer subscribing members?

You can buy redistribution rights for some softwares or guides and give them for free to your premium members. Of course it will be costly for, but if the contents are good people will be willing to buy your premium subscription.

I've never really had subscribing members before, I don't really see the point on smaller forums but on bigger forums I can see it as a nice benefit. I've always gone the "Elite/VIP" route and promote members who contribute a lot so they can have a nice member title and a private forum all to themselves.
