Every webmaster passes the time when a new member registers to their forum. Do you welcome new users with an automatic welcome message? Does this approach work well and is there anything you wouldn't include in a PM?

I would rather use an automatic message, I know it is generic but I would rather have geniune posts on my forum than to have just "Welcome XYZ" to the forum.

I think that this is a very important thing to do because it shows that you value that person being on the forum and this can help a lot.. You can do it in a topic or in a PM.

I prefer sending a personalized message so I sound human which also helps me build good relationship to the new member and make that person genuinely feel welcome.

I think that is a very good idea because it will make all the difference in teh world in trying to get them to promote the forum as well and feel at ease there too.

Exactly my point! Once new members get comfortable because of the way they were welcomed, they're most likely engage and promote the forum.

That is a very goog point and at the same time that personal touch will allow for them to feel as if they are part of a community rather than just working on the forum.

Well, on my forums I do not send any welcome messages. However, I believe sending welcome messages along with links to important topics such as guidelines, rules, introduction threads, etc. is highly beneficial because it will help the new member familiarize with you forum.

I'm not very engaging when it comes to welcoming members since I know most people come for the resources and then leave, but when they do actually post an introduction topic I gladly welcome them to the community and encourage their participation.

This approach is very good and a way to help members that are joining the forum understand what the forum is all about. I wouldn't want to start telling them about the rules that may end up making them being banned. I just focus on getting the right things done by explaining to them, via the welcome message, areas they can find out things that they wish to do on the forum.
