There is a cognitive bias called rosy retrospection where humans tend to remember only the positive aspects of the past. We block out the bad memories.

Yep, I can say that growing up in the 90's and 00's makes me love both decades but I was a child and carefree so I'm sure it was different for my parents. It's the same reason why you'll see people say "back in my day we had it better!" when ever generation had good and bad things happen. They just choose to remember the good times and forget the bad things that happened.
