Warning Points vs Warnings?

So some forum softwares come with warning points as default as opposed to warnings. Which system do you prefer- normal warnings where the offender is alerted to a breach of forum rules or warning points which have varying totals depending on the offence and leads to further sanctions for reaching a collective total?

What do you use and why?

I think it's important to have written reasons and to have the message come straight from a staff member.

Plus, keeping up on points seems like unneeded work!

Yes indeed it does when a standard warning can be issued though having worked with both systems, I understand the argument for having warning points

The last forum software I installed on my forum was phpBB. I used warnings instead of warning points. If a user received 3 warnings, they received a 90 day ban by default.

I don't think it is a big deal whether or not you use warning points or warnings. If a user is constantly violating forum rules, he/she deserves a bit of break (in the form of a ban).

I prefer warnings, because it is simpler.
