What is likely to turn you away from a particular forum software in a hurry?

I am usually talking to people that have used or are currently using that particular software. If they don't seem happy with it, then that will be the quickest way to see me running in the other direction. Now, I understand that you aren't going to please everyone all the time. But if you have a lot of people that are unhappy with your software, then you are probably doing something wrong and you don't care about it.

I think if a software is too difficult to navigate then that turns me off for sure. Granted, if there are instructions available or support I suppose that's OK. However, if a forum software isn't giving a whole "plug and play" type feel then I usually lose interest and seek something else. I think this is mainly because I'm not very strong in the programming department so anything too involved that I've no knowledge of using I tend to just move on to something that doesn't require as much programming skills.

I have to have something with a modern feel to it. Softwares like phpBB tick me off a lot because they seem like SMF in 2010. :p

This^^

The software has to have a modern look to it or I'm not going to use it. That goes for the website of the software as well.

Sharon brought up a good point. I hate sites that are too hard to navigate. The same can be said for forum software....if it's to hard to navigate/use then I'm dead set against using it.

Ease of use and how modern it is. I quickly ran away from phpBB after seeing how difficult it was to use and how old it looked and in terms of its features

I get turned off from forums that have a basic design and are not responsive. Those are two big big beefs I have with the majority of forums.

Definitely agree. It has to be responsive. If it's not, I'm outta there.
