Traffic sharing with other sites?

Is there such a thing as traffic sharing? As in sharing traffic with other sites? I think it would be a fun way to team up with other sites, to help each other out traffic wise. Is there anything like this? Would you ever do it?

One of the purpose of building backlinks is to use another site to build traffic on yours (some sort of traffic sharing). When your web link is shared on high traffic website, you can divert some of the traffic to your website.
