Teens & forums?

I see nothing wrong with hiring teenagers as moderators as long as they have proven to be responsible and capable of the job. At the end of the day, it is about the forum succeeding and the moderator doing his job, age is just a number and age shouldn't define a persons character.

Well, if a teenager is 13, that's too young. But 17-year-old teenager is okay. Of course, it depends on their personal characteristics and the sense for responsibility.

As I have said on other forums, teenagers have proven to be more intellectual and mature than some adults. In cases where this is true, I'll hire a teenager. However, I limit the amount of teens and the age of teens. I typically will not hire someone under the age of 15 as they are barely old enough to be online in the first place.

I think hiring teenagers on forums are great since they can be a pretty big audience. You really have to look at the standpoint as to whether or not they are mature and can present themselves professionally during the hiring process, however. If a teenager is at least 15 years old, I say you should give them a shot regardless!

Honestly, I generally wouldn't hire any teen that are 13 or 14, simply because they haven't gotten to the point of understanding enough of the online world, to really give quality time with what their staff position would require. At ages 15 and above, so long as they are mature and they know what they are doing, I wouldn't mind hiring them, so long as they don't do anything severe, like being constantly rude to others.

As long as they are mature, they know what they are doing, they're serious about it, and they're nice, I see no problem with hiring teens as staff members.

I'm only 16 myself. :p

Age has little effect on forum management , what counts is experience and professionalism. Online forum is not like offline where physical presence may be needed

Do you think it is a good idea to hire teenagers as a staff member on a forum? Why or why not?

Would you hire a teenager on your forum?
Personally i don't think that this is a good idea because at that time in their life they could be a bit immature and this could hurt the forum and how they interact with members.

While we talk about engaging teenagers, we should be very careful not to disturb their studies and education. We can engage them during holidays to teach them how to interact with members and how to handle and run a business. Having a young mind in the team would definitely have a positive and fun impact on the overall site's operation.

That is a good point as well because there are a lot of teens that would neglect their studies in order to work on these online forums thinking that it is a full time job when it is not at this stage.

I don't see any problem with hiring teenagers, but I agree with those who said that it should be at least 15 and above because I tried to look back when I was 15 and I know I'm already responsible at that time, so just do a screening to make sure the person has a sense of responsibility and can follow instructions well. Also, it would be helpful if you could put a bit of a limit regarding their interaction so they would have enough time for other responsibilities, especially their studies.

There needs to be some sort of age range that can be put into otion to hire them because if you are looking at a job like this then it requires a certain level of maturity that comes with age.

Provided the teen has qualified and has all wht it takes to oversee the operations of the forum and has the age of at least six-teen years then I don't see any reason whatsoever that particular teen be denied the job. As the saying goes that 'teens are the future leaders' tomorrow never comes. This (now) must be their time to prove to the world that they can.

While talking about engaging teenagers, we must be very careful not to interfere with their education or academics. We can work with them over the holidays to educate them how to manage and operate a business as well as how to deal with members. The team would undoubtedly benefit from having a young person on it, and it would be enjoyable.

I don't see anything wrong with hiring a teenager as a staff member on one's forum. I would definitely hire a teenager on my forum that's if he or she is qualified.

I do not hire anyone below the age of 18. I think it's fine if you want to hire a teen, as long as they're of age for work. I personally go for the best person for the job, and most of the time teens are not that. Teens aren't good for what I do, so I try to hire people to write content who are in the industry for a while, so that way I know the content he/she puts out, will help my site.

I might hire a teenager as a programmer, developer or any other kind of back end engineer but teens wouldn't have the emotional intelligence that comes with experience sometimes to manage people and processes.

I think this depends on the niche. If your forum is about pop culture (movies, TV shows, games, music, etc.), I think teens will make the best moderators as they are quite familiar with these topics. But teens might also lack skills with moderation jobs and they might by mistakenly anger some regular members, which can be detrimental for the forum.

If your forum is open for teenagers to register and become your community members, they are capable of working as a staff in your forum. I wouldn't mind hiring any of them if they have the skill, knowledge and experience to work.
