Taking the leap to unmanaged VPS?

I recently experienced moving from a Shared Webhosting plan, over to an unmanaged VPS and was wondering if other's had a similar experience of such a large leap in skill?

When looking around Google and forums for reliable VPS Providers, a lot were labelled as 'Managed VPS Solutions' which didn't really offer the flexibility (or affordability) that we wanted for our sites, so we went ahead and read up on Linux Administration and a few months later took the leap over to an unmanaged VPS.

Since migrating last year, we've experienced no downtime and no major issues. From no knowledge of VPS/Server management, to running our own VPS was a big learning curve but worth it in the long run; Do you think unmanaged VPS' are accessible for the average webmaster?

I am a small publisher. I have a website hosted with namecheap shared hosting. I am using shared hosting because it is cheap and my website does not have a large traffic. I also do not deal with financial transactions, therefore, I do not have to deal with security issues. However, I might switch to better hosting, when my website grows big.

I would never make use of the unmanage website hosting system because from what I have heard it is not a reliable means of website hosting as it is actually more prone to attacks and unstable movement than a managed VPS hosting services.

I have been using shared hosting since 6 years. I once switched hosting package, I switched from a package that allowed hosting of 3 websites to hosting unlimited website, but never upgraded my hosting

Unmanaged VPS means when you will have less support from your server. You have to take care of your server and monitor the performance. Unmanaged VPS is usually for people who are really good at technical things. If you choose Unmanaged VPS you may need to know about software updates, DNS configurations, control panel set up, server backup, etc.

Managed VPS, Unmanaged VPS, Hosting Guides, Hosting Learning, VPS Hosting

Advantages of Unmanaged VPS are:

• They are generally cheaper than Managed VPS because the hosting provider gives less support and you have to manage your own website. Therefore, they charge lesser compared to Managed VPS.

• You have full remote access to your server and self-management rights.

• Your information is safe since no one can access it except you.

• You can use resources according to your needs.

You will need VPS, managed or unmanaged, only when you want to build a site that deals with secure information, for instance ecommerce site where you receive payment informaion.

At this moment I cannot afford to pay for VPS even if I wanted to launch my website now. I will be looking for shared hosting. I think shared hosting s good for starter.
