What successful competitions have you seen? (gaining activity for the forum) Why do you think it was successful? What prizes did they offer and how did they decide upon a winner/ winners?

Nearly all competitions are successful during the time the competition is running and I don't think there's the "right" way of running a competition that will cause people to stick around your website after it ends. In the end all that matters is the content/community and site's management and nothing else.

I have seen promotions that worked and gave activities to forum; they were all based on posts! The first one was the first 50 persons to reach 50 posts on the new forum get $5. The second was $1 to each 100th then 1000th poster to a specific thread!

Those competitions ask users to interact; when you really pay, you get activities, users get paid!

Well, I'm actually going to start a competition / event here real soon on a forum that I own, so we will have to see how that works out! I've seen many competitions fail simply because no one knew about them. I believe that competitions can be very beneficial to a forum that's already established, but other than that, you're running a risk of it completely falling on its butt.
