Have you ever shut down your website? How did you come to the decision to shut your website down? What did you do with the domain, website files and database? In the last couple of years, I have shut down a lot of websites, mostly blogs and also one forum, because running websites was getting very expensive and these websites were not earning me any money.

I shut down a few websites in the past. I had some nice domains in the 90's. One of them I let go because I got religious and it didn't feel appropriate to run it anymore. Then another one I had Microsoft come after me for trademark violations, so I abandoned it too, although I probably should have fought it or worked something out.

I've shut down plenty, usually when I shut one down
I just forward the domain to another one of my sites
until it expires.

Don't you try to sell your website or domain when you do not want to run it any more? Well, my first priority is always to sell it. Shutting down is my last option. When I shut down my website I move content to another website and let the domain expire.

If the domain may be of value to someone else I may put it up for sale but I've never been successful in selling any of them so I usually just forward and let expire.

Well, I have also tried selling the domains but never been successful. The only domains I ever sold was when I sold websites. I gave away my domains along with website. When I shut website, I also let domains expire
