For sites that are new and have minimal traffic, is it a good idea to wait to place ads on the site?

I know some ads can slow down speeds and if placed badly, can put new readers or visitors off from the site entirely. What do you think?

If you have access to quality ads, for instance, Google Adsense, there is no need to wait for traffic to build up. Well, you do need traffic on your site to earn from ads but having ads like Adsense also boost confidence in visitors that the site has quality content. That's because adsense is approved only when the site has quality content. If you are using a lot of ad units or using 100 percent add fill rate, your site will surely load slow but if you have few ad units it is fine.

Have you found that you make any money starting so soon with ads on a new site? A friend of mine has had ads on a site that get minimal but steady traffic and said he doesn't make much at all for a year's time. It's kind of disappointing really. How many ads and how much traffic is needed to really make money?
