Old school-style forums were perfect - they preserved comment history better, had a more welcoming "anonymous" feel to them, could have posts that span years and didn't have the sort of "flash in the pan" feeling that Reddit does.
New posts bumping old threads up was way better than sorting stuff by upvotes. It meant that new developments caused a flurry of activity that directly pushed the thread to the top of that forum category. Comment sorting by oldest to newest made sense, instead of this arbitrary "first comment starts a thread." and deep conversations devolve into pressing into oblivion.
