Returning members

How do you keep members returning, other than posting? How do you keep things fresh and new?

A way to do that, I feel like, are contests. Not necessarily posting contests, but scavenger hunt type contests and graphics of the week and caption of the week and such.

I would organize interesting and cool contests and events every now and again, so somethings going on around the forum and try to keep the activity up.

Posting doesn't have to be meaningless and boring. If useful and informative content is posted it will generate some productive discussions and that is what forums are all about. People need to find the forum useful, cool and attractive in order to be drawn to spend more time there. Contests, freebies and polls might help.

Contests with cash rewards can be a good way to make your returning member start posting on the forum again. These days people are no longer interested in providing free content, they want to be paid for every activity.

I do not think a forum owner wants members who just visit the forum posts, they want members who create topics and posts. While not all visitors will post on your forums, encouraging most of your visitors post on your siet will help you to grow big. If you want returning members ands active members, you need to offer interesting content.
