So I thought about it, and the question is what is your thought on admins checking your pms?

I think that there are times that this may actually be necessary because there are times that there are members in a forum that will harass another member or say things that are very harmful and hurtful as well and i think that this is a major concern. However i think that the admin should not always be monitoring pms. Instead they should only look at it when the conversation is reported to them.

I think monitoring members' personal/private messages is essential to create a safe environment for everyone. Admin must interfere and take action if members report someone's comment who spreads hatred or any kind of negativity.

Yeah I agree with the premises of having admins look into harassment and such abusive message, but what about just regular messages, some private exchanges. I am very against it since I'd rather have someone wait until I report it before taking actions.

That is also true, however think about it this way - when you are active on these forums there are a lot of people that have malicious intent and therefore they will tend to send you messages to try and scam you out of money with false claims and so forth, and if the admin is able to monitor those messages they will be able to intervene if necessary before someone had to fall victim to such a scam and prevent this person from messaging anyone else in the forum.

It is never a good thing that website owners should check the private messages of their users. If there is ever a reason for that then the web users are supposed to have agreed before that.

A website owner needs to be aware of any activity going on on his site because he needs to keep records in case any other thing that requires law happen so that there will be evidence to show in order to win the case.

admins checking your private messages for me i believe it is very wrong and should not be done except on some rare occasions like when a user is under investigation or has been reported by another member.

Admins checking participants private messages is absolutely not right. Privacy is never to brake in regardless of anything. If admins are conducting a check up,then permission should be asked before breaking into PM's

To ensure a secure atmosphere for everyone, I believe it is imperative to monitor members' personal/private messages.
When users report comments that incite hatred or other forms of negativity, the administrator must step in and take appropriate action.

I don't think they have the right to view your private messages, but I'm sure they are easily able to if they wanted to. Isn't all a database, so if that's accessible, they can view the messages. Now it's on them to not actually do it. The only time I would be okay with someone viewing private messages, is when someone is being harrassed, bullied, or there are reports from other users. Or a criminal investigation is happening. Otherwise, you don't have the right to peep at those private messages.

I really don't like the idea of administration checking out my pms. There is a reason it is called private messages and not public messages.

Any administrator that reads private messages has crossed the line and will put my reputation at danger because if found out can threaten to sue me and I wouldn't try to think of the associated expenses.

I do not like admin checking my private messages but then I also do not share any information in my private messages that actually needs to be kept private. I do not share personal information online, so I have no issues even when the admin reads the private messages.

There have been mixed feelings about this issue of administrators checking their member's personal messages. There are some people who don't like while some don't care about it.

My question is why would an administrator want to be snooping their his users DMs? If there's an issue with a particular member, they can do that and I won't argue it but for them to be randomly reading their members DMs, it's only a pervert would do something like this.
