Do you feel it's worth the cost? Well, I think it can be. I mean, if a company is ranking for SEO, they must be the real deal, right? Could there be a mistake in this logic?

There's value in it since SEO companies (going by experience from working at an agency years ago) usually offer vast resources and expertise as part of the retainer. Ranking better on Google is but just one result. For communities, I don't believe it's as valuable as say promotion and urging members to invite like-minded individuals. The community should be built organically and if you only offer a place for discussion I find it difficult to see how you can really draw traffic from search engines unless you manage to get a thread ranking well.
