Owning a forum for community or money?

I've heard many different reasons why people own a forum. To create an awesome community while others have a forum to try and make money.

Why do you own a forum?

I would own a forum just for the community. You don't make a lot of money off forums so I don't know why people think they would be rich by selling a forum.

You'd be amazed how much some forums go for and how much people make off of forums. xD

Honestly, I don't care if I make money or not. Granted, money is always welcome, though I personally love the community and just creating a place to really talk to people, money is just an extra perk.

I've made my forum for the community and to help. If I earn money, yay! If not, I have other jobs!

I create my forum(s) for the sake of the community, friendship and everything that goes into it, I may add ads to pay for the site's hosting and domain otherwise the site is there for the sake of a "community".

I think the only reason you should be owning a forum is if it's to create a amazing community, if you care more about the money side of things you should not be running a forum, because forums do not get that much anyway.

To a point, you have to be able to balance it. If you make a good (and large enough) community, it will outgrow the "fun" type community type thing where you can fund it with a small amount of money. You have to at least get close to cutting even. Selling is where you make your money.
