Optimizing image load times for a portfolio site?

Each image is averaging a filesize of 500-600 KB. Is that too much for a portfolio site? A lot of mine are sketches/paintings, so I'd like them to be big and high resolution at a good quality.

Losslessy compress them all and preferably host them on an external image host that doesn't compress image quality, or better yet if possible a CDN.
