Note: I liked the old theme also and it's available as an option, though not default.

They're both a clean and simple theme.

Pairing WordPress with an independent forum will always be a minor mismatch, unless you use a WordPress plugin. I've never liked bridging separate systems. It's not just updating and maintaining two systems, its actually updating three systems: CMS, the forum, and the bridge.
