Merchandising your site

I know this is probably a long range idea, but i've worked with it and its proven somewhat effective. But what are your thoughts on having merchandise (shirts, coffee mugs, etc) with something you've created via your website, to help bring in some extra cash?

I have already done something in this area, have created a t-shirt design and printed it for myself. I am in the process of working on a new design for the tees and then some of them will be sent to our members of the month, for free, and some will be placed for other members to buy. As the community will grow, more people will want to support it and also brag about their involvement in it. This would help us all promote better and the revenue it might bring would be used to further develop the community, so that it would be bigger and better for its members.
