This made me sad to see.

A man who found that his computer was infected with ransomware demanding a payment of £13,000 or face jail decided to take his own life and his four year old son.

I'd hate to speculate. But it is clear that the man had done something criminal. Otherwise, there was no reason for him to fear threats of arrest.
