Life Sentences

I'm referring to sentences where you will certainly die in prison, not the 'life' sentences where you will eventually walk free.

What is your opinion on life sentences? Do you believe in second chances? Does everyone deserve a second chance? Is a life sentence a better punishment than capital punishment?

I think this is a difficult subject to discuss but it is interesting as it can provide many different perspectives from posters.
I think these fake 'life sentences' are ridiculous and 'life' should be plain and simple... until the day that you die. It is not life if you can work freely to start your life again in X amount of years.

I think it depends on the crime and maybe even the way they have been behaving in prison, but mainly the level of crime. Perhaps thieves and such can be given another chance but I think anyone who destroys or damages human life does not deserve another chance.

Life sentences are the best way for murderers. I mean, the state killing people for any reason - other than self-defense, and really they should be using rubber bullets or something, is simply barbaric - and shows they are no better than the murderers they are executing.

I think prisons are more like a correction system which should help people from relapsing into taking up bad values.

The fact that countries still have legal systems which gives 'prison untill death' is prejudiced by two counts.

1. It automatically assumes that the said person will not repent and reform in later life. This defeats the very purpose of modern day prisons which we call as correction homes.

2. It results in the person falling into deep disappointment, despair and dejection and offers no incentive to think about reformation.

I believe people can reform into better human beings and even if they can't, I don't think two wrongs make a right. Killing someone because they murdered a victim isn't okay and sometimes what happens years down the line, evidence gets found to say they were not guilty? It's then too late.

My only problem is that taxpayer money is spent to house/feed criminals that have committed crimes beyond comprehension. If they are truly guilty without a doubt, then I say end it.

I do not believe in second chances for certain crimes. I would support the death penalty as well for certain crimes but then we get the problem of how sure are we that this person is guilty. There have been so many cases where people have been wrongly convincted.

It depends on the crime they committed but I believe all people should have a 2nd chance. Even if its a 2nd chance while serving a life sentence in jail. If they deserve the death penalty because of their crime then thats what it should be.
