I'll come back here tomorrow and comment a bit on what's happening....
Comes back a week later...
Pretty much:
The GCSB, which is an intelligence agency (a pathetic one) decided to spy on Kim Dotcom in the lead up to his arrest. Under current New Zealand laws, it is illegal is spy on residents or citizens (Dotcom is a resident but was NOT granted citizenship due to his misbehavior in the past). Dotcom paid for a big fireworks display in our biggest city to celebrate becoming a resident a few years ago- so the fact that an INTELLIGENCE agency overlooked that and illegally spied on Dotcom is either rather funny or rather serious.
Dotcom was worth over $170 million. If he is not extradited to the US, it is possible that he will take legal action against the NZ government and the US. Most probably OUR government would fork out millions in legal aid reparations for the US's mistake.
The US and NZ are looking for tighter relations- although NZ is also looking for tighter relations with China, Russia, East Asian Countries and India as well (mostly China). NZ's relationship with the US collapsed after we banned Nuclear Vessels in our waters- and banned ANYTHING nuclear.
There is, in reality no doubt that Kim Dotcom is innocent. I suspect the US government went after him because he wasn't a US citizen and he was in NZ (i.e. an easy target as out police and intelligence service will do whatever the US wants).
The police obviously did not investigate the evidence themselves and relied upon the CIA/FBI to tell them what to do.
The other issue in this, is that one of Dotcom's friends is an MP- John Banks (and former Mayor of our largest city). Banks is an important MP because without him, the government doesn't have a majority. He is a one man party (on the far right) in coalition with the goverment. He accepted a large donation from Kim Dotcom. As he didn't help Dotcom (his supposed friend, Banks went to Dotcoms wedding anniversary and flew to his house etc.) when he got arrested, Dotcom dropped him in it. He mentioned he'd given this donation and Banks hadn't declared it. The police investigated. Dotcom was right BUT the claim against Banks hadn't been put through in time, so Banks got off.
And that is that.
