Is it sometimes too much to have a ton of topic areas on forums?

Some forums have far too many topic areas in my opinion. I think most forums have a theme they follow and include the recommended topic areas. When I think of forums that do it right, like Bizdustry for example, it doesn't have too many topic areas, but has just about enough I'd say. I feel everything is covered here, and we don't have too many topic areas. I think there is a limit for most people. I think most forums should be like bizdustry. I've seen forums with topic areas for everything, and some areas didn't even have conversation due to how many different sections there was. Anyway, what do you think about all of this?

You're right, bro! It's crucial for a forum to strike a balance between providing enough topic areas for discussion without overwhelming users. Bizdustry does a great job at maintaining focus while covering a wide range of themes. Too many sections can lead to diluted conversations and low engagement.

Yeah Bizdustry does it right. It's not too crowded, and everything is categorized properly. Makes navigating the forum so much easier. I remember joining forums that had an topic area for just about everything. It wasn't even in categories to make it easier on users. My first forum was kinda overwhelming because I wanted it to be a general purpose forum where everything can be discussed. But that can be too much for some.

The choice between a wide range of topics or a few focused topics depends on your specific goals for the forum. Consider the target audience, their preferences, and the purpose of the platform. Some forums successfully strike a balance by having a few main categories with subcategories that allow for a combination of focused and diverse discussions.

In reality, having many topics is preferable if they do not resay the same thing. For example, if the subject is about the Payeer payment system, then resay Is Payeer safe for use? Or for example: Do you rely on Payeer as a payment processor for safety? Or What is the level of security of using a Payeer account? Then the three threads there are talking about the same subject. You can have 1000 threads but in reality, they are talking about 200 different subjects, and the same topic is repeated in 5 threads.

I do not think it will be a problem if the topics are unique (no duplicate thread exists), however, a lot of duplicate threads really hurt the reputation of the forum and also traffic.

I have on too many occasions been on forums that end up having way too many areas and a lot of them end up left empty for a while which I feel never is a good look for a forum.

As someone who has run forums for over 19 years now, I myself firmly believe that you should only have the forum areas that you need in the beginning and as your forum grows, that is when you should expand the areas as they are needed.

In the beginning forum is empty from threads and participations, after period it is increased step by step and then when it becomes very popular then people start promoting advertisements then it needs moderation team for people spreading advertisement or to lock duplicate threads.

It depends on the purpose of the forum. If the forum is meant to be a general discussion forum, then it is better to have many topics so that people can discuss a wide range of subjects. However, if the forum is meant to be focused on a specific topic, then it is better to have fewer topics so that people can focus on that topic.
