There are a couple of things related to the value of domain, for instance, the uniqueness in the name, length of the domain name, keywords usage, and also extension used. Different domain extensions have different prices. For example, ".io" might cost around $35, ".online" might be about $32, but you can get a ".com" domain for as little as $8.You need to remember, the extension does not help in ranking, your domain name does. In other words, Top Level Domain does not help in ranking, Second Level Domain does.

I'm not so sure about the ranking thing. I think if you registered a .co.uk, you might be associated with the UK and if you had a .co.in extension, you get associated with India, for instance.

Well, I'm wondering, "What does the hosting contribute to ranking?". In other words, how does the location of the datacenters matter?

dot co dot uk is a country domain and these domains are good for local SEO. For instance dot uk domain ranks in the US easily compared to dot com. Hosting has nothing to do with ranking. The location of data center has nothing to do with ranking.
