The essence of running a contest in a community is to boost engagement and traffic in the forum. It can attract new members who would want to partake in the contest to win from the money prize pool and also prompt old members to contribute more in the community. I've seen where $500 was set aside for a community contest. It's the biggest I've seen in a very long time.

I have a long-term goal of creating a contest budget on my forums once I get to a phase where I try to monetize them. In fact, the main budget will be letting the forum pay for itself and then the rest will go into community events like contests and giveaways.

For now, I wouldn't mind spending $100 per contest. I have some going on with AAF and OTF right now. The award is smaller than $100 but if they're successful, I'll keep kicking up towards $100.
