When it comes to website hosting, downtime can have a huge impact on your business or project. But how much downtime is too much?

For example, you have:
• Acceptable Downtime:
For most businesses, 99.9% uptime (roughly 8.76 hours of downtime per year) is the standard. It’s reasonable for routine maintenance or unexpected technical issues.
• Unacceptable Downtime:
Anything less than 99.5% uptime (more than 43.8 hours of downtime annually) could lead to:
• Lost sales or revenue
• Damaged customer trust
• Poor search engine rankings

💡 Pro Tip: High-traffic websites, e-commerce stores, and critical services should aim for 99.99% uptime (less than 52 minutes of downtime per year).

What’s your tolerance for downtime? Would you switch providers over too much downtime? Share your thoughts below! 👇

If you are getting free service or low cost, then expecting top tier service level performance from it is somewhat unrealistic.
The old motto of you get what you pay for usually applies.
Now, as for amount of down time? Honestly if it's less than 99.9% that's too much. And of all the VPS/dedi providers I've dealt with over the years, it's probably nearer to 99.98%.
So yes, if I noticed a host either being down regularly or poor performance from it I'll leave. Classic example is the Contabo VPS that I currently run a friends site on, another site that is administered by an XF admin I am friends online with and my blog. I've noticed that the performance really sucks... but honestly what do you expect for $6 a month. As I said earlier, you get what you pay for. And I regularly buy cups of coffee more expensive than the VPS costs for the entire month. :sneaky:
So I am waiting on another OVH sale on either their KimSufi line or their SYS line to get another dedicated server. I'm honestly hoping on a SYS sale as then I could move my main site over to it.
