How many sites is too many?

It all depends on what your intentions are. If you are planning to sell websites, you can build any number of websites you want. If you are earning really well from your website, you can build some more to maximize profits.
You've said it all, it solely depends on the goal you have at hand . If you are opting to build it for yourself, it would definitely be wise to give it your best shot as it would help bring maximum results.
 
Having multiple sites can be demanding and would definitely not be sustainable if you are the only one controlling them.
There is this good thing about focusing on one thing at a time.
 
With regards to running locales, I like to keep it straightforward. Probably, I like to have around 5 destinations, yet no less than 3. I'm considering scaling back to only 3 locales, as I get focused on watching out for too much. Furthermore, I feel as such, I can zero in my experience on only those 3 and make them far better.

Sometimes you launch a website but you fail for ad approval or something like that so you will run 2 or 3 others websites to have monetization approved or something in this purpose.
 
I don't complicate matter for myself, i handle one and makes it successful than the three wouldn't be, if I'm managing them at same time. I don't like stressing myself up for something that will take lots of my time and not achieve all i want.

Making too many sites could have its advantages as well. But the fact of the matter is that when you create a new website, you must concentrate more and more on various websites and this could be hard.
 
Everything hinges on your intentions.
You can create as many websites as you like if you intend to sell them.
If your website is making a lot of money, you can construct more to increase revenue.
 
I don't complicate things, handle one and have more success than three at the same time. I don't like being stressed about not being able to accomplish everything that I want to do that takes time.
 
If you are full time webmaster and if your sites generate enough revenue to maintain your websites and also make profits for you, and if you have someone to assist you when you need assistance, I think you can handle a lot of sites.
