I can't really say my answer here as I haven't had much experience in monetizing forums!
But I do see a lot of other successful forum admins here! ;)

Never had a chance to do it really. The max member count I had at one point was only around 300 but around 100k posts. Was an old general chat board and had about 20 regular people posting which was quite alright. That thing is in forum hell right now haha.

If I were to make a forum I wouldn't plan on making money out of it, if anything that could be a small benefit.

I"ve done my foruming as a hobby. the thought of a more active community suits me and its something i don't mind the small costs of keeping the site up. I have been thinking about ways to make money with ads but not quite sure how to integrate them.

Its a shame we haven't been able to do that as much as we wanted to here. There are so many plug-ins that we would love to have to enhance the member experience that we just cannot shell out money on. (Cough cough, XF add-on makers charging exorbitant prices for simple things)
