How do you figure out your site has the spark compared to your competition?

Personally I always go to my competitions sites and research my main keywords hard core and try to find out what my site would offer to people in that niche that my competitors don't

What you have mentioned here is extremely important because people are always going to be looking for something different if they are going to switch over from one website to another and i think that if you are able to see what they are offering you are able to strategically plan your offers to make sure that they are better and more enticing, especially for new people that are still weighing up the benefits of the two sites.

There are a lot of tools that will help you check your competitors' traffic, traffic source, and even revenue. You can check these metrics and compare them with your own website. You will have to plan appropriate course of action based on your market data.
