What are some hosting software you personally would avoid? I'd pick those free forum makers, they won't usually make your site look all that good.

You can make the free forum hosts look good with a good skin, but that takes real effort, and you're still limited on functionality though this isn't a pain point for some.

I'd never host with GoDaddy, anyone with 'cheap' in the name and anyone with 'free' in the name.

Honest and quality advice here. Find yourself reliability and support, that's worth a price.

At the top of my list
NameCheap
GoDaddy
HostGator
InMotion
Hostinger

Realize.. I don't deal with "free forum/blog setup" sites and their associated BS installs... I actually look at the hosting providers themselves for those that want to set up a site and host it via a standalone script.

My site is currently hosted with Hetzner on a VPS... which is VERY reasonably priced, and so far I've had no issues with them (and I do have a "few" years of dealing with VPS/dedi providers under my belt). I'd have NO issues with recommending them as long as one acknowledges that certain VPS aspects are only available in certain regions (specifically in some cases processors - AMD vs Intel). I personally have no issue with my VPS being AMD based, but if you want Intel, you are slightly more restricted.

I would stay away from Dreamhost. The DNS settings for my domain never updated, and I didn't get any response from their customer service when I tried contacting them. I also would stay away from 000webhost. Free hosting isn't the best, and it's okay to use it if you're just starting out but 000webhost is the worst free hosting service IMO.
