Has anybody ever tried hosting a web site from your own home with Apache or something like that?

I hosted a few of my old forums from my home with Apache. However, I would never do that now due to how easy it has become for anybody to DDoS people. When I hosted things at home, only the elite had the ability to DDoS. :p

Never in my life. The closest to that was at school, with an assignment we made a pretend website to learn to use Apache. It was so long ago so I don't really remember much of it. I guess it used to be easier in a way to get away with it before. I definitely wouldn't want to spend money to get the equipment I think I'd need in order to have a website in optimal conditions with the computer on at all times.

For how long did you have yours?

Yes, some experience. While it can be fun to do, it's not recommended for production use. As ScottP mentioned, the speed and uptime of a home connection is not suitable for most projects, especially a public project.
