Yes I have noticed this, our site was being shut down for a whole 21 hours and we couldn't work for a whole day, but it was restored after we had it upgraded and now we have to run maintenance everyday

I have hosted 20 websites on the same shared server and I have never experienced any DDOS attack. If your site is big, if you receive a lot of traffic, if you have a competitor who is jealous, you might experience DDOS.

It can happen sometimes when the website is under threat by a hacker or maybe too many people are trying to access the same website at a time which causes overloading of the website. Though the website is normal after sometime , and usually the site goes into maintenance as soon as it suffers from DDOS attacks.
