Taboola has a strong market presence in the United States. If you run your website in other regions, would suggest you go for google and amazon's affiliate marketing program. They are more lucrative compared to Taboola in the other regions.

Has anyone used Taboola to monetize or advertise their site?

When looking to monetize any site that you may have you have to make sure that you are using advertisements that are relevant to your area in order to get more engagament in those ads.
If you check Taboola ads on various website you will see that mostly promote clickbait content, they also promote content that is arranged in a slideshow. You will have to visit 10-20 pages to read the entire article. If you specialize in this type of content, you can try tabola for advertising.
