It has become official. Google will now give websites that have SSL enabled on their websites an extra boost in their rankings. This news came out not to long after WebGuruBB even joined the efforts and enabled SSL support on the site.

As SSL is not really needed unless you are selling stuff online or carrying sensitive information, what are your thoughts on this entire matter?

It seems like Google is trying to be the force to make change for the greater good. Unfortunately it is difficult to justify your "don't be evil" motto when you are basically forcing webmasters to enable SSL because you believe it is for the best.

Not a big fan of this decision, especially since they're forcing you to spend money in order to rank better. I also have a concern that now SSL will lose on its validity since nearly every site will be running it if it wants to compete with others.

Well, SSL is not always a good thing. Look at that big OpenSSL vulnerability that just happened to to long ago xD I can't say it won't be the last big hole in the system.

But it also only does cost less then a domain so I don't mind xD

Yes, startcom (startssl) provide free SSLs. A little tricky to setup though, if anyone gets stuck give me a shout. Google will start selling domains, SSL certs, pretty much anything they can swipe from other businesses. Oh and of course the google products will show up 1st in search ;)

If you buy your domains and such from Google they are giving you a ranking boost?
Where did you hear this? This is the first I am hearing of it.

I guess I worded myself wrong but you never know not all SSL certificates are equal and could be judged differently in the eyes of Google. What I meant was Google will rank #1 for terms such as "Buy SSL certificate" "Buy Domain" etc in the future. I think a lawsuit will hit them at some point because they are for sure playing with the rankings. "website speed test" For a while Google ranked #1 for this when they launched PageSpeed, and I'm sure Companies like pingdom and gtmetrix suffered because of it.

Search Engines need to be more open and fair.

Ahh okay, I missed understood xD

To be fair, it is not illegal to have your website rank higher in your own search engine xD Corporations even pay Google to have their rankings show up first.
