Giving away Premium Membership

Under what circumstances should you give away a VIP or premium membership? What are the best ways to use this for marketing/ promotion purposes?

Give VIP/Premium membership to people who contribute frequently and consistently towards the site/forum with meaningful and useful posts.

Especially don't give it away for higher post counts or simply being there the longest. Those are irrelevant. Base giving it away on quality rather than quantity.

If your site/forum takes into account who referred you to the site do a competition of who can refer the most active members. Overall make it who can refer the most members but take into account those who refer people who actually post should get more than those who just refer members who don't contribute or participate.

It's pretty easy to tell which members actually care about the community. If you see a member logging in often, posting often, and helping out people, then that's the perfect time to give them a premium membership.

I think that would be a good time to give away a Valued Contributor rank
Premium memberships if not bought can be probably obtain through a a contest as a side prize. Unless your site offers a lot of useful stuff and has a lot of benefits for premium users, I feel offering a premium subscription as your main prize though is nothing to fancy and should only be given next to the main contest prize.

Other than contests, if your marketing your site you can probably give coupons way in your marketing campaign for a cheaper subscription fee as a "try out".

I agree. People who help to keep a forum active should be given valued contributor rank. This rank could have the same features of a premium member.
