Ever run an adult website?

What do you think about running an adult website as a webmaster? Do you think that it's something that's going to get so much traffic and likely make you a lot of money in the process? There's a big traffic on porń which suggests that running an adult website might be a good project.

I currently own a adult themed forum, but I find it hard to promote it since it's based around a fetish. It's a niche fetish too that I don't really feel comfortable going into detail here in public. I know there's subreddits and already old established communities based around the fetish, but I wanted to try and own a community of my own.

Porn and piracy... the two areas that get constant traffic.
The problem is now it's getting where if your site is available in certain states (in the US) and you don't follow their imbecilic rules you could get fined thousands of dollars. It's one reason PornHub no longer offers traffic to IP addresses originating out of Texas. I think there was one other major porn site that is now doing the same also from what I read.

I can relate. I've never run or allowed mature content on any of my sites. I try and run rated PG sites. I can understand they sometimes receive lots of traffic and noticeability, but it's a niche/category I don't care for and don't want to get involved in.

They receive more than that... those sites pay fairly well for those that are about the money.
Me personally... throughout my career I've come across just anything you can imagine at one time or another that is not dangerous (and some what were dangerous and ended up with the participants in an ER).
I'm not into that kind of stuff (PØRN), but don't begrudge those who are. It takes different types to make the world go around. It would be rather boring if everyone only liked the same thing.
The problem with it is that it gives unrealistic expectations to the younger viewers of it (usually male). No, not every female is going to be into "true" booty calls, nor will the be shorn.

I agree, it would be. I'm not against adult sites or mature content necessarily, but if it finds the wrong audience then it could do more damage than good. Primarily to the younger audience, as you mentioned.

It's essentially something that just doesn't interest me personally. I'd rather talk about things of interest and not so personal, but I know everyone doesn't have a filter when they post online.

I ran adult sites for 25 years. Not just "porn", but content definitely not appropriate for a regular site. I only made $250 off of ads one time after several years. I did receive over $500 in donations overall.

I didn't run them for money, but rather the community. I met a lot of cool people with similar interests...

I shut the last one down earlier this year and just run Session 9 now (PG-13).

I do not think it is easy for adult sites to get traffic, just like the normal sites there is a huge competition and you still need to rank on search engines for traffic.

Unfortunately, the internet now-a-days is just WAY too hostile towards anything remotely related to the XXX industry.
PornHub got in trouble, OnlyFans got in trouble, Fetlife got in trouble, among many other big name sites in this corner of the internet. Stripperwebs, a VALUABLE resource for the adult industry in general (strippers, cam-girls, onlyfans girls, etc.) went offline in February 2023 for no clear reason.

Not to mention, many people don't feel comfortable giving out a copy of their ID, even if they black out all other sensitive info outside of their birthday (which I don't blame, again, given the current state of how internet privacy is basically dead, lots of big corps getting in trouble for selling sensitive info to scammers, etc.).

There's also the problem of SESTA-FOSTA and other bills that have made sex work that much more hard and straight up dangerous. A LOT of funding related sites (Patreon, PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, etc.) explicitly forbid support adult industry (XXX) content.

I have a site that's basically ready to open, but I don't feel comfortable given the overall hostile nature towards sex workers as well as the difficulties of keeping everyone safe from creeps who inevitably are drawn to those kinds of sites.

Yup, I hear ya. I currently am working on a small site to showcase and allow people to download my adult text stories. As far as I know, this is okay....
